These books can give you insights into teaching at the college level, they can provide you with the “best practices” to use while teaching, and can give you guidance on how to obtain academic jobs. Everyone has a set of particular needs and weaknesses that must be overcome. Therefore, it is inappropriate and futile to make recommendations. Instead, you should take the time to determine the types of information you need and then search out books on these subjects. However, you should keep in mind that these books do not necessarily contain definitive information about the subject. They often are a compilation of the thoughts, ideas, and experiences of the Arthurs. Thus, it is imperative that you read the reviews about each book to determine the ones that may be the most helpful to you.

I love browsing college bookstores, especially those of large universities. I spend hours looking at the textbooks to see the types and levels of the courses being taught. Next, I go over to the books for education majors and look at them. There are often books available on how to teach in my field. I can always pick up a fewer pointers simply by browsing through these books. Then, I end up at the reference section and check out what books
are on-hand that may be of interest and value to me.

If you are looking for guidance, a viable supplement to reading books on a career as a college professor is to go to your local colleges and universities and talk to the their professors. Most of them will be happy to discuss their field with you. You will receive insights and advice that you might not otherwise have retrieved from your readings.
